In New York City, the mayor has now asked the police and fire departments to enforce a state law requiring intervention in cases of severe mental health crisis -- including the possibility of having an individual involuntarily committed to a hospital. Laura Kavanagh, the city’s new fire department commissioner, is the first woman to hold the position and the youngest to serve in over a century.
